Media Relations Coordinator

Earning coverage in the news media is a key strategy for increasing the University’s name recognition, enhancing its reputation, and positioning it favorably to support student recruitment, alumni engagement, government and corporate relations. The Office of University Communications and Marketing has been given primary responsibility for earning news coverage and serves as the institution’s primary point of contact with journalists.
The Media Relations Coordinator supports these efforts. Working under the close supervision of the Media Relations Director, the Coordinator drafts news releases, interacts with journalists and with campus sources, tracks earned media coverage, maintains records and creates reports, and performs other related tasks.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Drafts news releases and related materials for distribution to the news media
Develops and updates news media contact lists
Distributes news releases, story pitches and background material to journalists
Posts information to the University’s website
Responds to requests from journalists
Staffs press conferences and other news media events
Monitors news coverage of the University on a daily basis
Prepares monthly and quarterly tracking reports
Performs other duties as assigned.

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
One year of work experience in news media relations, or equivalent
Superior written and oral communications skills
Understanding of and commitment to diversity and inclusion
College degree in public relations, communications, or the humanities
Familiarity with Associated Press style
Experience serving a higher education institution
