Assistant Director of Communications


Founded in 1774, Newark Academy has a rich history as an independent, coeducational school, for grades 6-12, located on a beautiful 68-acre campus in Livingston, NJ. Newark Academy is seeking an experienced and motivated writing/editing professional to serve in the role of Assistant Director of Communications and Marketing. The successful candidate will have primary responsibility for developing and creating stories to illustrate Newark Academy’s mission and strategic goals and for sharing those stories with constituents in all categories.


Reports to: Director of Communications and Marketing



  • Work collaboratively with the Director of Communications and Marketing to plan each edition of LUMEN, the Newark Academy magazine and to:
  • Serve as the primary writer / editor of the magazine
  • Hire and oversee freelance writers, photographers, and illustrators (as needed) for production of the magazine
  • Serves as primary copy editor, fact-checker and proofreader for the magazine
  • Select all art to accompany magazine stories
  • Serve as the primary contact with the external design firm that provides layout and design for the magazine
  • Serve as the primary contact with the external printing company that provides production and distribution of the magazine
  • Work collaboratively with Director of Communications and Marketing to plan, write, edit, proofread and oversee production of other school print publications including the Annual Report on Giving, departmental brochures and collateral materials
  • Write and edit news stories to support community engagement and brand-building
  • Attend and staff key school functions, writing and posting news copy and collaborating with colleagues on social media coverage of the event
  • Develop informational emails for parent and alumni constituent groups – including writing, gathering existing content, editing and distribution
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the Advancement team to write and/or edit copy to support the school’s fundraising, alumni relations and admission efforts
  • Adhere to Newark Academy’s brand identity and written style guidelines on all communications
  • Proofread and edit a variety of content generated by colleagues including (but not limited to) electronic push pages, reports, and collateral publications
  • Write and submit press releases and pitch feature story ideas to media, as needed
  • Produce compelling and accurate website content and news updates
  • Organize content for the annual Back-to-School guide
  • Work collaboratively with the Director of Communications and Marketing to oversee photo shoots with freelance photographers
  • Manage Newark Academy’s digital asset database including collecting and uploading photography from a variety of sources, categorizing and tagging photos and serving as the primary source for photography retrieval



  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills,
  • Exceptional editing and proofreading skills, with excellent attention to detail
  • Excellent knowledge of grammar
  • Knowledge of Associated Press Style
  • Strong interpersonal skills and proven ability to work as a team member in providing communications support to multiple school departments
  • The ability to create written content for informational, persuasive or technical purposes, depending upon the audience’s needs and school objectives
  • Ability to learn and retain nuances of numerous programs and initiatives in a large and busy school
  • Ability to work independently as well as take direction and feedback as part of the creative process
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills and the ability to meet tight deadlines
  • Creativity, resourcefulness and a high degree of flexibility, as well as problem-solving ability
  • Ability to prioritize among competing goals and requests for the benefit of the School
  • Ability to maintain accurate records
  • Ability to work occasional evenings or weekends
  • Experience working with content management systems (electronic email, website platforms)
  • Proficiency with Windows and Mac operating systems (Google, Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Suite, Photoshop, InDesign, etc.) and platforms related to digital asset management and CRM.
  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a communications-related field
  • A minimum of 3 years of professional writing/editing experience. Successful candidates must be prepared to complete a writing / editing exercise as part of the hiring process


The position is full-time, 12 months per year, and eligible for benefits.

Salary is commensurate with experience.
