INTERVIEW WITH JOE GARGIULO OF COYNE PR

The Value of Membership in PRSA’s New Jersey Chapter

Joe Gargiulo is a Senior Vice President at Coyne PR — a leading firm with offices in Parsippany, NJ and New York City that was named one of the Top Places to Work in PR for 2020 by PRNEWS. He is also a member of PRSA NJ’s Executive Board and serves as the chapter’s Treasurer.

Recently, Joe took time to reflect on the changes impacting the PR industry and on the value of actively participating in the New Jersey chapter.

* What led you to a career in PR/Communications?

I have always been a ‘news junkie,’ even going back to being a teenager. I took a PR 101 class and it completely captivated me. Not only was it enlightening, but it captured my passion and thinking. From this I pursued a career in the PR industry and have found it tremendously rewarding.

* How has the PR business changed during your years with Coyne? Has 2020’s COVID crisis had a significant impact on how the firm operates?

During my 16+ years, Coyne PR has evolved from a small boutique agency to now a mid-size with more than 150 employees. There have been so many changes over the years, from technologies that have expanded our expertise, to the expanded services that have evolved into a full-service communications firm. The COVID crisis has certainly impacted our firm and has proved that with virtual tools and technologies, we can continue to function effectively, with seamless focus, to deliver great results and expert counsel for our clients.

* What do you consider to be some of Coyne’s notable successes in recent years?

There have been many successes for Coyne PR over recent years. Our work has been recognized in the industry with many awards and our client retention has remained much higher than the industry average. I would suggest that one of our best successes has been attracting fantastic talent and grooming each to be leaders in our firm and select industries.

* What traits and skills do you look for when recruiting young PR professionals?

When recruiting young professionals, we look for applicants to have a degree in communications or PR, plus valuable experience through internships or volunteer opportunities. Our teams become very interested in applicants who especially express a real passion for PR and the opportunities exist within.

* How does PRSA’s New Jersey chapter add value to Coyne PR’s business?

The Chapter provides a wide array of networking opportunities for the agency, plus helps extend Coyne PR’s industry exposure. The Chapter also provides a great opportunity for agency and non-agency professionals to volunteer help and shape possibilities for industry professions within New Jersey.
