TornettaPresident's Note

By Jennifer Tornetta, APR

Enthusiasm is what I have for our chapter – more so today than when a past president coaxed me into service on the board several years ago.  Our Board has made some changes that we hope will spur your enthusiasm.

Engaging our members is our focus – not a PR buzzword. We look forward to bringing you meaningful events – including a crisis communications seminar with tips from those impacted by the Boston Marathon Bombing and the team that turned around what it called “The Most Hated Company in America.”

New leadership team, New Year, and new chapter administrator are reason for excitement.  We’ll kick off the year with a planning dinner, which will include the formal voting for our new Board. Please participate in our elections and consider serving at the committee and/or board level. In an effort to be more efficient and effective in bringing value to you, the Board focused this year selecting a new chapter administrator – Bower Management Services, LLC. We look forward to our partnership with them, which you can read more about within this newsletter. Look for emails from prsanjadministrator@bowermanagementservices.com for more information about the elections, events and other news for 2014.

Thankful for the dedication of our leadership team, I am especially grateful to Kristine Simoes, APR, incoming president – for her business savvy, get-it-done attitude, commitment to organizational stewardship and sense of humor; and to David Patti, vice president; Joe Gargiulo, treasurer (and leader of the function few PR folks treasure); AnnaMaria Lalevee, secretary; Cecelia Coakley, Ken Jacobs, Tim Schramm, directors-at-large, and all our committee chairs and members for their active, passionate leadership.

Helpful information about industry trends is at your electronic fingertip through PRSA’s webinars, which are free to members.

Understanding the importance of mentoring new professionals and supporting seasoned colleagues in an environment that calls on most of us – from agencies to one-person handling PR for an organization -  to be experts in marketing, technology, internal and external communications, measurement and analysis, etc. we are committed to partnering  with like-minded organizations, including the Jersey Shore Public Relations and Advertising Council; New Jersey Marcom; Public Relations Council of Greater Atlantic City.

Social media use – under the leadership of Joan Bosisio, social media chair and past president, PRSA NJ - broadens our reach and enhances our conversations, one of which recently focused on a reporter questioning why PR professionals are increasingly unprofessional in communicating with her. See PRSA NJ’s Facebook timeline for the conversation that ensued.

Inspired by the many professionals – including former PRSA NJ President and PRSA Chair Elect Joe Cohen, and stories we heard at the PRSA 2013 International Conference in Philly, we hope to share some of what we and PRSSA members learned here, and throughout the year, and to see you in Washington, D.C. for the 2014 conference. Perhaps you’ll present in 2014!

Aspiring students seeking a career in our field are positively impacting their communities as PRSSA members. Check out the newest PRSSA chapter at the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey.

Supporting you in your personal and professional growth - and with day-to-day issues – is what we do. Reach out to us through prsanj.org, on Facebook or to any of your leadership team individually.

Motivating you to enjoy your PRSA member benefits; to share your time, talents and thoughts and to attend one or more of our events in 2014 is what we’ll continue to do through this newsletter, thanks to Laurie Wheeler, advocacy chair.

I hope the end of the year brings you the opportunity to celebrate your personal and professional accomplishments and to enjoy family and friends.
