My PR Passion – An Agency Visit Sparks, Enlightens Me

Tierney Communications Account Executive Jamie Bartolino accompanied seven aspiring Richard Stockton College of New Jersey public relations students on a tour of Tierney Communications in Philadelphia the last Friday morning in October.  As one of those seven PR pre-professionals, I found the experience enriching and enlightening.

Walking through the Tierney halls I was able to envision myself sitting at one of those work stations.  When Bartolino lead our group into a room named “The Creative Room,” I was captivated by the red walls, large whiteboard and large conference table. I could tell it was designed to develop creative group discussions – as it certainly did among our group.  I was intrigued by the idea that public relations departments’, agencies’ or teams’ members collaborate and socialize with one another.  I learned PR is far more than writing press releases and media contact lists.

Another defining moment of the tour was when Bartolino walked our group into a small meeting room and introduced us to several team members.  They discussed Tierney’s mission and gave several examples of how Tierney assists clients.  I was intrigued by their marketing tactics and how they created commercials that I see frequently on television.  I admired this agency’s creative ability and its role of serving as creative thinkers for nationally and regionally known organizations.  I was inspired by how Tierney’s team handles various accounts and realized how exciting it would be to be an account executive for one of those accounts. 

My fellow PRSSA members and I appreciated the opportunity to meet with and learn from the Tierney Communications team.  Being exposed to a well-known agency and learning how it manages relationships with clients has helped fuel my PR passion and increase my understanding of the responsibilities I would have in an agency setting. This experience has taught me that I crave the ability to work at an agency and utilize my creative edge on large accounts such as the ones that Tierney tackles on a day-to-day basis.
